Message From Vice Chancellor

I feel highly privileged to welcome you to the website of National Academy of Medical Science (NAMS), Bir hospital. NAMS as an academy (Deemed University) established in 2002 aims at imparting postgraduate and superspecialty medical education in the country. Furthermore, the academy from its inception has emphasized on providing quality medical education, delivering expert health services and conducting health related research works in the country. With its over a century long service to the nation, the country felt the need of transforming it to a medical degree providing academy. As such, the academy has a bigger responsibility of providing the best medical services to the people and the high medical degrees to its aspirants.

NAMS, situated in the heart of the capital city, Kathmandu, has been successful to produce over five hundred specialist doctors and nurses and more than a dozen of superspecialty doctors (DM, M.Ch) during its decade long academic journey. Since NAMS mainly targets to fulfill the health policy of the country, its plans, programs, and activities are geared to that end. To upgrade and modernize the field of medicine in the country, this academy utilizes the available national resources and health institutes. As such, the academy is expanding its services to the central, regional, sub-regional, zonal and district level hospitals within the country.

Bir Hospital, with its historic and over a century long service to the nation, will be the central hospital and centre of excellence for the general medical as well as trauma and emergency services; maternity hospital at Thapathali will be the centre of excellence for the obstetric and gynaecology and women’s health; Kanti children’s hospital will be centre for excellence for the neonates and child health and Sukraraj Shastri hospital at Teku will be the centre of excellence for tropical and infectious diseases.

Our post graduate education is a residential program of three years duration offering degrees such as MD, MS, MDS, DM, M Ch and post basic nursing (PBN). Master of Nursing, a two- year program, will be launched soon. The post graduate programs are self-motivated and problem based active learning programs. Our aim is to produce high quality, skilled, knowledgeable and socially responsible human resources for the nation. In addition, the academy makes use of modern technology and culture of ethical practices in the use of medicine and socialization of resident in the human dealings.

Being a specialty master's program in medical education, research methodology and live saving procedure like ACLS and TLS are the mandatory courses in the curricula. Regular revision of the curricula as per the national and international standard is maintained. During the residency certain mandatory procedures such as, seminars and symposium attendance, presentation and more than 90 per cent attendance in the class are to be fulfilled in order to be eligible to sit in the final examination.

In the present context, I believe that it is a big challenge for me to make the Bir Hospital administration exemplary, pragmatic and efficiency based hospital but with everyone's cooperation and sincere efforts I am pretty sure that we can achieve our goals and make the academy a world class academic institution.
